In this context, Healing is a natural energy that helps promote health, recovery and relaxation in living beings. Both animals and people can benefit from receiving healing. Anyone who channels this healing energy is commonly called a “healer”. Typically, healers have learned to draw in, focus and channel the naturally-occurring healing energy which they then direct to themselves or others. They also usually have one or more Guides who assist with the healing; a spirit healing guide or a Reiki guide. When a person or animal receives this focussed healing energy it supports and encourages their bodies’ own healing processes to work to repair and remedy whatever needs to be helped.
Healing is not a religion or a belief system. It works whether you believe in it or not. Because it works in a complementary way, healing can be safely used alongside any medication or natural remedies. However, it is not a replacement for conventional medicine and you should always consult your GP about acute or infectious conditions and urgent problems.
Healing can bring benefit on all levels, physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Acute problems may be helped quickly whereas longer-standing matters take more time. Whilst usually very effective, healing is not an instant fix or miracle cure; the beneficial effects build up and a number of treatments may be needed.

Reiki, pronounced Ray-Kee, is a form of this natural healing energy that is activated by intention. The name Reiki comes from a Japanese word that is usually translated to "Universal Life Energy". It was "re-discovered" in the 20th century by Dr. Mikao Usui. Eastern medicine has always recognised and worked with this energy, which flows through all living things. This energy, known as “ki” in Japan, “chi” in China and “prana” in India, is vital to our well-being. Yoga, Tai-Chi and Acupuncture are also based on the free-flow of this energy in a person.
TopAt the most basic level there is no difference between the two. For someone receiving the healing there are no appreciable differences other than the approach that the healer may take. A Spiritual Healer will typically work around the head, shoulders and any specific problem area the person has identified. A Reiki Healer will typically cover the main seven chakra (energy centre) locations and any specific problem area the person has identified.
Reiki is often seen as more popular because the word “Spiritual” suggests different things to different people, whereas Reiki is Reiki. Reiki is considered quicker and easier to learn, although it still takes time to become accomplished and experienced.
TopValerie and Andrew Brown are experienced with both Spiritual and Reiki healing. They trained with Spiritual Healing in 1996, began their Reiki training in 2002 and qualified at Reiki Master / Teacher level in 2004. They have provided healing sessions, Spiritual Healer training and Reiki attunements for many people.
TopWe currently offer three ways to receive healing services:
Our Community Healing service provides free* healing treatments. These are held every alternate Tuesday morning at Horden Spiritual Friendship Centre, Sixth Street, Horden, SE8 4SE.
*There is no charge for this healing, but a donation to Centre funds is appreciated.
We offer one-to-one Reiki treatments in Hartlepool. These sessions last around one hour and cost £30 per session.
As an alternative to regular Reiki, as we are both Reiki healers, we can work together providing enhanced energy levels to give a different Reiki experience. Our Reiki Plus (two-healer) sessions last around 40 minutes rather than one hour. The cost is the same for one-to-one and two-healer sessions. The Reiki Plus may be more suitable for people who are already familiar with receiving energy healing, and can be adapted to include other exercises such as cord-cutting or negativity removal, for example.
Before your first Reiki treatment with us we have an initial discussion. This takes around 15 minutes, so you should allow additional time for your first visit. This time allows us to explain what we do, what you can expect during the Reiki, and allow you to ask any questions you may have about Reiki.
TopOne of the main benefits of Reiki is that, no matter what your particular health problem, almost everyone experiencing a treatment feels relaxed, calmer, more positive, less stressed and better able to cope with daily life.
The treatment usually takes an hour. You lie on a couch, fully clothed. If you can not lie down the treatment can be completed with you sitting in a chair. Usually there will be some relaxing music playing quietly, and you are encouraged to relax. The practitioner then gently places their hands on you in a series of positions from the crown to the soles of the feet. (Some practitioners work with their hands a few inches above you.) Each position is held for a few minutes.
People receiving Reiki usually feel very relaxed, and may fall asleep. Sometimes they may feel a gentle warmth, coolness or tingling as the energy flows. Everyone experiences Reiki in their own way and it is usually a very pleasant experience. Very occasionally, you may become quite emotional if there is a big release of negative energy. This is actually a positive sign that healing has taken place on a deep level.
